50mm, 50th birthday.

Sounds like something I had planned, but it was pure coindicence. We travelled to Southampton for a family birthday party and I was asked last minute to take some photos. All I brought along was my nifty fifty and my RF100-500; and I definitely wasn’t going to use that in a confined spaced to capture moments!

50mm is just about wide enough to capture two or three people, even in a relatively small space.

With a wider field of view you’re much more likely to get people in the background doing weird things, like stuffing their faces or looking bored.

The 50mm is a good balance and allows you to capture the moment without the distractions.

I like the limitations of a prime lens, especially when shooting informal events like parties. It forces you to get creative and makes for interesting compositions and framing.

The wide aperture is ideal for the low light conditions. Even the budget 1.8.

Get close-up for those candle-blowing key moments and nobody with their mobile phone will out-do you on the glory shots!
